Five reasons why people sometimes don't see a therapist when, perhaps, they should...

therapist therapy

Here are five common reasons why people often don't seek therapy when, perhaps, they should.

  1. Stigma and Shame: Many people hesitate to seek therapy due to the stigma surrounding mental health issues. There is a pervasive fear of being judged or labelled as "weak" or "unstable." This can be particularly challenging in cultures or communities where mental health issues are not openly discussed. It’s important to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength and self-awareness, not a weakness.

  2. Financial Constraints: The cost of therapy can be a significant barrier for many individuals. Even with public health options like the NHS, there can be long waiting times and limited availability of therapists. For those seeking private therapy, the expense can seem prohibitive. However, many the therapies that I provide have a huge advantage that there are quick gains. You are not looking at years and years to get the benefits you require which significantly impacts the cost.

  3. Lack of Awareness: Some people may not recognise that what they are experiencing could benefit from therapy. Mental health issues can manifest in various ways, and individuals might attribute their struggles to stress, personality traits, or situational factors rather than considering therapy. Increasing awareness about the broad range of issues therapy can address is crucial. Get in touch for a free initial consultation. We can explore your challenges and see whether therapy can help. there is NEVER any pressure for you to proceed.

  4. Previous Negative Experiences: Those who have had negative experiences with therapy in the past may be reluctant to try again. This could be due to a lack of connection with a previous therapist or feeling that the therapy was not effective. It’s important to remember that finding the right therapist can take time, and a different approach or therapist might lead to a much more positive experience. There are over 400 different types of talking therapy and they are very different to each other. i am always happy to explain how the therapies I offer work and are different to "problem' oriented approaches.

  5. Fear of Vulnerability: The thought of opening up to a stranger about deeply personal issues can be daunting. Many people fear being judged or misunderstood, or they may simply feel uncomfortable with the idea of discussing their emotions and thoughts. Building a trusting relationship with a therapist takes time, and it’s okay to proceed at your own pace. A good therapist will create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can feel secure in expressing yourself. The therapies I offer are much about building the future that you want rather than delving into the past (this often is simply not helpful or constructive...)
